5 Tea Party Sandwiches - Dairy Free or Lactose Free

5 Tea Party Sandwiches - Dairy Free or Lactose Free

Here's the First in Our Tea Party Series

Today we begin our reimagined tea parties with five classic tea sandwiches changed up to be dairy free or lactose free. Some of the sandwiches include Manchego (sheep’s milk) or goat cheeses, which have less lactose than in cow’s milk cheeses. Some people who are lactose intolerant find they can eat a little of one or both. Well-aged Manchego works best because it contains even less lactose.

Try any or all of these delicious sandwiches:

  • Egg salad and pea sprouts (dairy free)
  • Smoked salmon and lactose free cream cheese, topped with capers or fresh dill
  • Cucumber and lactose free cream cheese
  • Radish, goat cheese, and cracked pepper
  • Manchego cheese triangles on fig jam

Instead of the traditional thin, white sandwich bread, we opted for healthier bread with more interesting textures. We used marble rye and sprouted sourdough. We also tried an Italian loaf but that turned out to be difficult to trim the crusts and cut into small sandwich sizes. Of course there are many gluten free breads that would substitute well in these recipes. Pick a favorite and let us know the results.

5 Tea Party Sandwiches – Dairy Free or Lactose Free
Here are 5 classic tea party sandwiches changed up to be dairy free, lactose free or with less lactose. Marble rye and sprouted sourdough breads add great flavor and texture.
Ingredients
    Egg Salad (dairy free):
  • 4 eggs, hard boiled and cooled
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons minced dill pickle (or sweet pickle)
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • pea sprouts (or arugula)
  • 4-6 slices marble rye bread
Instructions
1. Peel hardboiled eggs. Coarsely chop and place in a medium bowl. Add mayonnaise, vinegar, pickles, dry mustard, salt and pepper. Stir gently. Adjust the ingredients and seasonings to taste. 2. Spread egg salad on marble rye and top with pea sprouts. Trim crusts and cut in small triangles or use cookie cutters (before filling) to create circles or other shapes. Other sandwiches: Use marble rye or sprouted sourdough bread. Cut into shapes, trimming crusts. Make some sandwiches open-faced to show off an artful arrangement of the fillings. Smoked salmon and lactose free cream cheese, topped with capers or fresh dill. Cucumber(thin sliced) and lactose free cream cheese. Radish, goat cheese, and cracked pepper. Manchego cheese triangles on fig jam. Note: - Manchego (especially longer-aged) and goat cheese do have lactose but less than in cow’s milk cheeses.
