We’re finally sitting on the patio again, together, enjoying the late afternoon with its low, slanting light and a cool, fall breeze. What a relief – the wildfire smoke has finally cleared, at least for today.
There’s nothing quite so crowd-pleasing as a taco bar. I learned leading Girl Scout troops and youth groups, the way to work around a myriad of preferences, allergies and picky eating is to offer a food bar where kids can add their favorite toppings and customize what they eat.
We can’t wait to be together and cook together again, but in the meantime, here’s a fun challenge: social distance nachos.
Our whole vibe is cooking together and offering recipes for gatherings. Every part of this is hard right now.
Rebel claims that I start thinking about Thanksgiving recipe ideas around, say, July. As she joked with me a couple of summers ago about this, I said she exaggerated. Once she’d pointed it out, I noticed, ok sure, some years it happens. Actually, maybe every year.
Here’s one more food allergy you may not have heard about: some people can’t eat red meat, including pork. Hard to believe if you haven’t run up against it.
We wanted to create a variation on egg salad that had plenty of curry and spice — and, of course, we made them dairy free. Master chefs that we are (hah, can you sense the sarcasm?), we made tiny mixtures of mayo and spices and tasted them.
