Best S'mores Yet - Plus You Can Make Them Dairy Free or Gluten Free

One Extra Step Makes S'mores Outrageously Delicious

If you’ve never tried a s’more with the graham crackers toasted and the chocolate a bit melty, well, you haven’t truly lived. Also, if as an adult you’ve found s’mores just ‘hurt your teeth’ from sweetness, you need to try making them with 72% dark chocolate, which has much less sugar. We thought it was the graham crackers and marshmallows that made it so sugary, but changing the chocolate makes all the difference.

This recipe is great for a crowd and such a treat to unwrap your individual s’more to reveal the insides all gooey and yummy. It’s almost as much fun as toasting marshmallows over a campfire.

You can prep the s’mores well ahead of time, make some dairy free or gluten free as needed, then pop them on the grill. You’ll have dessert for a crowd in 5 minutes.

Best S’mores Yet – and Make Them Dairy Free or Gluten Free
This simple trick will take your s’mores to the next level. You won’t believe the difference.
Ingredients
  • 8 graham crackers, (optional gluten free)
  • 8 squares dairy free dark chocolate, preferably 72%
  • 8 marshmallows
Instructions
1. Tear off a square of foil large enough to wrap around a s’more. Place 1 graham cracker on the foil. Top with 2 chocolate squares and 2 marshmallows. Place another graham cracker on top. 2. Wrap and seal the foil around the s’more. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make another 3 s’mores. 3. Heat grill to medium. 4. Place wrapped s’mores directly on the grill. Heat 2 minutes and flip once, heating 1-2 minutes on the second side. Marshmallows should be puffy and beginning to brown, chocolate partially melted, and the graham crackers beginning to brown around the edges. Serve immediately. Notes: - Use dairy free chocolate and/or gluten free graham crackers, according to dietary needs. Watch out because some gluten free crackers include dairy. - Dark chocolate is especially good and the 72% chocolate has much less sugar.
- To make these s’mores on the campfire, have coals ready or fire burned down to coals. Just before people start to toast the marshmallows on skewers, spread the graham crackers on foil at the far end of the grill. Place 1-2 chocolate pieces on every other graham cracker. When the marshmallows are ready, take a toasted graham cracker with chocolate (which should have partially melted) for the bottom and another toasted cracker for the top. Sandwich the marshmallows and enjoy.
